What The Most Successful Diets in the World have in Common


Nicole MolinThere are many diets that have been around for a long time. The Mediterranean diet, low-carb diet, paleo diet, and the whole food diet just to name a few.

These diets are all based on eating differently but all can give positive results. Instead of trying to decide which one of these is right for you, see what all of these diets have in common and make changes from there.

The first thing all of these diets have in common is they are all low in added sugar.  Most of us get way too much sugar in our diets. When we eat too much sugar the liver gets overloaded and turns it into fat.

Too much sugar can lead to high cholesterol, obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Next, these diets cut out refined grains. These are grains that have had the bran and endosperm removed which are the parts that contain fiber and nutrients from the grain.  What you are left with is a starch that will spike blood sugar levels to have them crash just a few short hours later leaving you hungry causing you to overeat.

Eating too much of these refined grains can lead to obesity, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

All of these diets also eliminated industrial vegetable oils. These include canola oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil and a few others. They contain too much polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acids, which we consume too much of. These oils can be replaced with healthier oils like coconut oil and olive oil.

Next they all eliminated artificial trans fat. This is oil that has gone through a process called hydrogenation, which makes the oil solid at room temperature. Trans fats have no health benefit and lead to heart disease.

All of these diets are high in vegetables and fiber. Vegetables are high in antioxidants, nutrients, and fiber. They even help the good bacteria in your stomach.

All of these diets focus on food, not calories.  All calories are not created equal. The different diets all focus on getting the right types of food into your body. If you can avoid what is not good for you and focus on getting nutritious food into your body, calories will not matter.
